Send texts through your own SMS gateway

Connect TurboSMS, AlphaSMS, SMSClub, Twilio, SMSAPI or seven.io so texts go out under your own sender name, choose which goes first, and let clients’ replies reach you.

  1. 01

    Know where texts go today

Without a gateway of your own, every text goes on your Setvos allowance — there is nothing to set up. Plan & billing shows how much of it you have used this month.

  2. 02

    Connect your own gateway

Open Integrations › SMS gateways. You need an account with the gateway and a sender name it has approved. Press “Connect” on its row, enter the credentials it asks for and your sender name, press “Test connection”, then “Connect”.

Texts then go out under your name and on your bill with the gateway, and they do not count against your Setvos allowance.

  3. 03

    Read how your texts travel

The sentence at the top of the section says what happens to a text today. With two or more gateways connected, press “Use for SMS” on the one that should go first; it is marked “Goes first”. Until you choose, the one connected earliest goes first.

  4. 04

Know what happens when your gateway refuses

If your gateway refuses a text, your next gateway is tried. Only when all of yours refuse does the text go on your Setvos allowance, if it has room, and count against it.

    • A campaign text never moves to the Setvos allowance; it fails instead.
    • If your gateway may already have sent a text — it took it and then did not confirm, for example — the text is not sent again anywhere, so no client is texted twice.
    • The owners and admins get one notice a day, in Setvos and by email, naming the failing gateway and what it said. In Account settings › Notifications it is called “Your SMS gateway is refusing texts”.
  5. 05

    Let clients’ replies reach you

Twilio, SMSAPI and seven.io can pass on what a client texts back; TurboSMS, AlphaSMS and SMSClub cannot. Below the gateways, the “Inbound webhooks” card holds the addresses to paste into each gateway’s settings, and the “Telephony: missed calls” address for your phone provider. If your role can change messaging settings, press “Generate secret” and copy the addresses at once: the full addresses are shown only once. “Rotate secret” asks first, then issues new ones; the old ones stop working at once, so paste the new ones into each gateway straight away.

The article on text replies explains what STOP and a cancel word do.

  6. 06

    Watch the numbers

In Messaging (SMS), “Texts this month” shows how many went through “Your gateway”, how many on the “Setvos allowance”, and the “Fallbacks” that went on ours because yours refused.

Common questions

Why does a text say “Your gateway may have sent it, so it was not sent again.”?

Your gateway took the text but did not confirm it, so it may have gone out. Setvos does not risk texting the client twice; check with the gateway if it matters.

Why did a campaign text fail when reminders went through?

When your own gateway refuses a campaign text, it fails rather than moving to the Setvos allowance, so a promotion never uses up what your reminders need.

What happens when my Setvos allowance runs out?

A text that would go on it fails with “The monthly SMS allowance ran out.”, and the owners and admins are told. Connect your own gateway, or ask an owner or admin to add a pack of texts on Plan & billing once your paid plan is running.

Can I manage SMS gateways on the phone?

Yes: the screen says which gateway goes first and when a text goes on your Setvos allowance instead, and “Use for SMS” sets the first. Reply addresses show with Copy, and Rotate asks first; the secret is shown once.
