Security and sign-in · How-to
Turn on two-factor sign-in
Add a second step to signing in: a six-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone, with backup codes in case you lose it.
Install an authenticator app
Any authenticator app works, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.
Start
Open Account settings › Security and press “Enable 2FA”. Enter your password and press “Continue”.
Scan the QR code
Scan the QR code in the dialog with your authenticator app. If the app cannot scan, add an account by entering a setup key and type in the “Authenticator secret” shown under the code.
Confirm
Type the “6-digit code” your app shows and press “Verify & enable”. From now on, signing in asks for a code after your password.
Save your backup codes
Next, the dialog shows your backup codes — only this once. Press “Copy” or “Download” and keep them somewhere safe, then press “I have saved them”. Each code signs you in once, in place of the 6-digit code, if you lose your phone.
Get new backup codes
With two-factor sign-in on, press “New backup codes” and confirm with your password when you have used up your codes or think someone has seen them. The new codes replace the old ones, which stop working.
Require it for owners and admins
An owner or admin can switch on “Require two-factor authentication for owners and admins” in Settings › General. Owners and admins without it then have seven days to set it up; after that they are refused until they do.
Turn it off
Press “Disable 2FA” and confirm with your password.
Common questions
- I lost my phone. How do I sign in?
After your password, press “Lost your device? Use a backup code” and type one of the codes you saved. Then, on Account settings › Security, turn two-factor sign-in off and on again to add your new phone. If you have no backup codes left, ask a colleague to tell us through “Report a problem” in the Help menu: our team can switch two-factor sign-in off for your account, and you then set it up again.
- How do I turn on two-factor sign-in on the phone?
In Account → Security, enter your password, then press “Open in my authenticator” — a phone cannot scan its own screen — or copy the key, or scan the QR code with another device. Enter a code from the app, then save your backup codes: they are shown once, with Copy and Save to Files. New codes and turning it off ask for your password again.
