Pay an advance and a remainder
Pay twice a month, an advance for the first half and a remainder for the rest, with bonuses and deductions counted once.
Set the cadence
“Twice a month (advance + remainder)” is the cadence in “Payroll settings” unless you changed it. With it, “Next by cadence” creates the advance first and the remainder second. A month paid in two parts cannot also have a whole-month run.
Run the advance
Once the 15th has passed, create the advance. It covers the 1st to the 15th: that half's share of salaries, and the hours, sales and classes in those days. Approve it, and mark it paid when you pay it.
Run the remainder
After the month ends, create the remainder. It works out the whole month, then subtracts the advance's net pay as “Advance paid”.
Carry the advance's bonuses and deductions
Anything you added to the advance appears on the remainder as an “Advance: …” line. It counts in the month's gross and taxes and comes back out with the advance's net, so each bonus or deduction is paid or held back once.
Know that the advance is now locked
Once a remainder exists, the advance can no longer be edited, rebuilt or deleted; its page says so and offers “Open the remainder”. To change the advance, delete the remainder while it is still a draft.
Read the month as one
Payroll › Periods and the overview's chart count a month paid in two parts once: the month's gross, and the net of both parts together.
Common questions
- Can I switch between once and twice a month?
Yes, in “Payroll settings”. The setting decides what “Next by cadence” creates and which pay day the overview shows next; you can always choose the part yourself.
